Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
