Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x above safe levels.

Fireworks Ban and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However earlier this year, the current regional administration approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Legal Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, judges approved the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the air has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Various Contamination Factors

The situation in Delhi is caused by a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby states of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is significant, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k early deaths per year in the city.
